LAURENCE CARUANA

Laurence Caruana is a Maltese artist, author and lecturer presently living between Vienna and Burgundy France.

He is best-known for his contribution to the Visionary Art movement, having exhibited his highly-detailed paintings in galleries and museums while authoring books and articles - even The First Manifesto of Visionary Art - and founding The Vienna Academy of Visionary Art.

His classically-inspired paintings explore the image language of myths, symbols & dreams, combining styles and iconographies from different cultures, east and west, ancient and modern. By crossing their myths and iconographies, his works explore history’s symbolic responses to ‘Eternal Questions’ on the nature of time, the afterlife and our soul’s journey through the cosmos.

Born in Toronto Canada of Maltese descent, he is a graduate of The University of Toronto, having studied Hermeneutical Philosophy and Biblical Interpretation (B.A. Hons. 1985). In the tradition of master and apprentice, he learned classical techniques of painting (the Mischtechnik) with the Fantastic Realist painter Ernst Fuchs, assisting him in his studios in Monaco and Castillon France, as well as his Apocalypse Chapel in southern Austria.

For most of his life, L. Caruana has led an itinerant existence, living variously in Toronto, Malta, Vienna, Munich, Monaco and Paris. His travels have also led him through Asia, Europe and Central America to broaden his sacred horizons and enrich his passion for religious iconographies.

While living in Munich, the painter met his future wife, the French artist/dancer Florence Ménard Cuepaliztli. Together they moved to Paris, where they shared a studio in the Bastille quarter for twelve years. During this time, L. Caruana created a series of paintings that reflected his deepening research into psychedelics while authoring several books and editing The Visionary Revue. As a result, he was often invited to speak on psychedelics at academic conferences and also had his first solo shows in Paris and Vienna. In 2008, he created The Summer Seminar at Torri Superiore Italy, an annual gathering of Visionary artists where he has taught the Mischtechnik for over fifteen years.

In 2012, the couple moved to Austria to co-found The Vienna Academy of Visionary Art. Over the course of seven years, its faculty expanded to 24 teachers while its facilities spread across three floors, including studios and workshops, an exhibition hall and cultural space. Until his death in 2015, Professor Ernst Fuchs had a studio on the top floor and oversaw the students’ work. As Academy Director, Laurence Caruana developed a series of lectures on Visionary Painting (filmed in 2016 and 2019). In 2020, the academy closed due to the Global Pandemic and the couple returned to their studios in Burgundy France. To continue transmitting the Mischtechnik, the painter has developed a new project - The Apocryphon Chapel - where he works with apprentices to depict the over-arching myth of Gnostic Christianity in fifteen large-scale paintings.

     L. Caruana has exhibited his works in a variety of settings, from national museums in Paris to Transformational festivals. He is also the author of five books and numerous journal articles. When he isn’t secluded in his Burgundy studio, the painter often travels abroad to promote Visionary Art through his many lectures, exhibitions and seminars.
